Contrary to popular belief, blackheads are not the result of having dirt on your skin. They are bumps that appear dark at the tip due to clogged hair follicles. If sebum (natural body oil) or dead skin cells get caught in your face or body’s pores, that can lead to inflammation and a pimple will form. When light hits, sometimes the sebum looks black. Hence the word "blackhead".
If you’ve ever gotten one before, you know how irritating and unsightly they can be. But you don’t have to “grin and bear it” while it takes residence on your face, back, chest or shoulders. There are several items you have at home that will help to gently remove your blackheads. Not only that, but they will help to restore your skin to a smooth complexion and healthy glow!
1. Try some lemon juice

Lemons are great for fighting all sorts of acne and the scars they leave behind. The hydroxyl acid in lemons is a powerful exfoliant. The antioxidants help to lighten acne marks. And the Vitamin C and potassium work to cleanse oily skin and remove bacteria. All you need to do is slice a lemon in half and rub it on your face. Allow the juice to dry and then rinse with warm water first, then cool to close up your pores.
2. Exfoliate with an apple cider vinegar peel

Apple cider vinegar contains a low amount (roughly 4-8 percent) of acetic acid. It’s an active ingredient that breaks down the buildup in your skin before the blackheads even start. Another great thing about apple cider vinegar is it naturally balances your pH levels so that sebum doesn’t clog up your pores. An effective way to use this product is to make your own face peel. 3. Scrub with sugar and olive oil
Exfoliation is the key to clear skin. Mostly because it removes dead skin cells so that you have a smooth and even complexion. You can purchase exfoliants at your local drug or department store. Or you can save time and money and make your own. Get some white or brown sugar and olive oil. For the record, we prefer brown sugar. It has a gentler texture and it has magnesium, potassium and Vitamin B in it. Olive oil makes the exfoliant a smoother texture. It also contains antioxidants that help to remove acne scars. Two teaspoons of sugar and one teaspoon of olive oil makes for the perfect exfoliant.
4. Make some honey and milk pore strips

You wouldn’t think something so delicious would be good for fighting blackheads, but honey is pretty potent! It contains antioxidants that fight free radicals, probiotic and antibacterial properties that deep cleanse the skin, acidity to reduce inflammation and its consistency pulls out the gunk in your pores. 5. If you must pick, steam first
The next time you sit down to make yourself a cup of herbal tea, leave the pot on and put your (clean) face over it for about 10 minutes. Steam helps to open up your pores so that impurities are easier to remove. It’s better to exfoliate blackheads than to pick them. But if you must squeeze them out, apply steam first. That will make it easier to dislodge the blackhead and reduce the risk of scarring.
6. Eat the right foods

No matter what you put on your skin, it’s not going to make much difference if you eat foods that add to your complexion problem. Luckily, there are foods you can eat that will help to keep blackheads (and acne overall) at bay. Citrus fruits are packed with antioxidants. Beans have protein that you need sans the fat that comes from a lot of meats. Garlic, brown rice and whole wheat bread contain selenium. It’s a mineral that keeps your skin healthy. And of course, there’s water. When there’s lemon juice in it, it’s an amazing detoxifier for your skin and liver. It will keep your face bright and beautiful and your body feeling energized too!
