How to Really Lose Weight and Actually Keep It Off

Anyone who has ever gone through the (sometimes super challenging) process of losing weight knows that one of the greatest concerns is figuring out ways to not only take it off but keep it off. And based on your schedule, your lifestyle and to a certain extent, even your genetic makeup, that can be harder for some than others.

Luckily, there are a few fool-proof things that can be applied, across the board.

Here are several things anyone can do to not only lose weight but to keep it off once it's gone.

1. Enjoy exercising

One of the reasons why a lot of people find themselves caught up in the yo-yo of dieting is because they are looking for ways to lose weight without exercise. But the reality is that in order to keep pounds off (and tone your body in the process), you're going to need to do some cardio and strength training. That's not to say that you have to take the traditional gym membership route. You simply need to find things to do to keep your body moving. 2. Keep a "dos" and "don'ts" list

You might've heard that when you're trying to keep pounds off, it's also a good idea to keep a journal of what you've eaten throughout each day. More specifically, it's smart to keep a list of things that you know should be on the "do eat" list and the "don't eat" list. That's not to say that you should never partake in the "don'ts"; however, if after a couple of weeks or so, you realize that you've been consuming more on that side, you'll immediately know how to make the proper adjustments.

3. Have a healthy relationship with your scale

Although some people are basically terrified of their scale, it's nothing to be afraid---or ashamed---of. A scale is not a human being. Therefore, it isn't able to hold grudges against you or be biased in what it reports. Scales simply let you know how you're doing when it comes to your weight management; and that's always good information to have. For this reason, get on yours about once every couple of weeks.

4. Don't reward yourself with food

A wise man once said "Don't reward yourself with food. You are not a dog." Yeah, it might sound a bit harsh, but that doesn't make it any less true. It is totally encouraged that you celebrate yourself whenever you reach a weight loss milestone. At the same time, it's a bit counterproductive to do it by eating your favorite junk food. Find other ways to pat yourself on the back like getting a massage or going to the movies with your girlfriends. Those things are just as fulfilling and calorie-free.

5. Nix dieting

Pretty much any nutritionist will tell you that dieting is not nearly as effective (or reliable) as a lifestyle change is. Remember that losing weight isn’t just about looking better but feeling better too. So, don’t focus on looking for a diet that will help you to lose weight. Research on how to eat in such a way that will ultimately be better for your mind, body and spirit. Long-term.
